A workshop by Mike Rijnierse for students from ArtScience Interfaculty
Werner Nekes is an experimental filmmaker who now owns one of the richest collections of pre-cinema optical machines in the world. This course takes examples from his collection as a starting point for developing post-cinematic optical machines. For those interested, there will be the possibillity to participate in an event around these themes that will be organized in Studio Loos Den Haag, on the 14th of october.
‘Optical machinery captures attention, to seduce and deceive the viewer’s eye. Anamorphosis, Laterna Magica devices, kaleidoscopes, perspective theater or zoetrope; these early moving images, optical instruments and apparatuses can be considered as precursors for film, television and the digital age. Many artists today use them, and their interest in those techniques is less triggered by a nostalgic longing, as by a desire to question the current production of images. In the combination of historical practices with new media, they present ways of seeing and make the process of imaging visible. The “optical machines” demonstrate how reality and fiction, illusion and vision are intertwined.’
