Either/Or

Marie Guilleray (voice), Wen Chin Fu (cello), Nicolau Lafeta (trumpet), and Rodrigo Parejo (flute) have been working on developing improvisations through two main axis : an exploration of different combinations of their unusual instrumentation (solo, duets, trios and quartets), and some experiments with sound and space, by exploring the acoustic properties of the space in which they play – among others, Centrum Space The Hague (september 2010), Villa Ockhenburg (october 2010), basement of the Villa Kabilla (june 2011). They’ve been collaborated with Felicity Provan (trumpet), ”Ground” performance by Jeroen Uyttendaele and Dewi de Vree. The quartet works across musical boundaries, all musicians sharing the improvisational space on an equal basis.

(Since Rodrigo will be back to Holland in May. We’ll play as trio.)

astero

Juan Matos Capote : home made oscillators
Alfredo Costa Monteiro : electro-acoustic devices

This duo, formed in Barcelona in 2010, employs modified domestic appliances as sound sources.
Two faces, two approaches which reveal the same enigma: that of sounds shaped in the moment of their own creation, by way of the simple contact of fingers, or of electricity passing through the internal circuits of the modified devices – or perhaps the amplification of materials, rather than objects. Inviting the most basic kinds of accident, resulting from unstable and minimal constructs, or from a more than simply intuitive handling, sometimes becoming accidents of accidents – either way you might say that the hand is the real instrument which, by way of clever tricks, vibrations, vague movements or tremors, stamps the sound with an indeterminacy which connects it directly to the organic.

www.costamonteiro.net

www.juanmatoscapote.net

Mike Majkowski & Jim Denley formed BLIP in 2008.

They have both been members of the Splinter Orchestra (large-scale Sydney-based improvisational group) since 2002, when MM was 19 & JD 45 – a difference of 26 years. JD has recently turned 55 and MM will soon turn 29 – still a difference of 26 years. MM uses double bass, pitch pipes and objects, and has been focusing on extending the technical possibilities of double bass bowing techniques. JD uses alto sax, bass flute, dismantled bass flute, prepared flute, Czech school flute, bamboo flute and balloons (although sometimes it’s just easier to say wind instruments). JD regards the main instrument he works with as being breath.

Paradoxically, they regard the work as being both composed and improvised.

They also focus on the deconstruction/reconstruction of the bass/reeds duo format, and trying to makes sense of this playing situation in the 21st Century. Sound, duration, texture, pitch and pulse are all important elements in their music.

They released their debut cd ‘calibrated’ (on splitrec) in 2010.

Program:

Duo Roro / Arvind Ganga (drums & guitar)

Roro (rogier smal) is a drummer who experiments with free percussion sounds. Besides playing in duo’s with people like Anne LaBerge (flutes) and Peter Quistgard (a musical magician) he plays in improv group “DAGORA”, with random improv musicians and solo. Roro tries to find the energy of space and participants while remaining open to the environment and acoustics.

Arvind Ganga uses guitar, effects and objects to create a chaotically oscillating mesh, vibrating with high energy that oozes out in colliding rhythms, frantic melodies and distant slow grooves… all bathing in the rays of a deep red sun.

As a duo, they will explore the mix of freedom and more freedom, and then some more freedom. yes, freedom !

Flavien Gillié (field recordings)

Flavien Gillié is a French artist based in Brussels. He’s doing field recordings as a link between places, voices and memory. He also reworks these field recordings and elaborates soundscapes presented live or in some installations.

For this performance he’ll be working on field recordings he did recently in the Kinsendael, a natural reserve in Brussels and some small islands near Sicilia.

www.soundisall.net

Galm Quartet (saxophones, electronics, guitar, drums)

Galm Quartet is an improvising four-piece combining tenor saxophone, electric guitar, analog electronics and drums. Galm Quartet devotes itself to instantaneously composed music. It’s about listening and acting in the moment, surprising and inspiring the others as well as the audience. The instruments of choice complement each other in sound, similarly, the musicians involved do so in playing style. That’s why WE have to play them.

George Hadow [UK] – drums

Andreas Fulgosi [IT]- electric guitar

Laurens van der Wee [NL] – electronics

Michael Foster [US]- saxophones

It will take place on Thursday 29th March (20.30h 3!) @ Studio Loos (Constant Rebequeplein 20, Den Haag) presenting:
\/\//\/\#2 by Mike Rijnierse & Jan Trützschler von Falkenstein

Fragmentation by Alberto Novello,
Emmanuel Elias Flores (Visuals) Honza Svasek (Butoh dance, EEG mind control)

Integration.04 by Dieter Vandoren

___________________________________________________________________
\/\//\/\#2 by Mike Rijnierse & Jan Trützschler von Falkenstein
An arrangement of tube lights is set up in a dark room according to its architectural conditions. The lights are set up in such a way that they create an ambiguous impression of a two dimensional structure and a three dimensional form. The change between different impressions is triggered by flickering of the light which leaves afterimages on the spectator’s retina.
The tube lights provide the source material for their sonic counterpart which creates immersive sonic textures.
___________________________________________________________________
Fragmentation by Alberto Novello explores the fragmentation of personality of the modern man. Exposed to aggressive stimulation and overwhelming data streams, he must make important choices to follow a rational “mind path” while his time quickly runs out. The performer wears an electro- encephalographic headset which detects his mind activity. The analysis of its output reveals the power of the performer’s three thoughts which are connected to forward movement, turn left, and turn right in the virtual maze projected on the floor. Despite the distracting external forces, embodied by the glitchy sound and flickering visuals, the performer must remain paradoxically calm to generate the correct states of mind that let him navigate his way out of the maze. Every time the performer passes a wall, getting closer to the exit, and a new stochastic musical scene is triggered. The time and structure of the composition is thus entirely determined by the choices and concentration of the performer. Emmanuel Elias Flore – Visuals. Honza Svasek – Butoh dance, EEG mind control. http://dindisalvadi.free.fr/
___________________________________________________________________
Integration.04 by Dieter Vandoren Preview of the forthcoming performance in Dieter’s Integration series. In Integration.04 he takes the audience on a trip in an immersive optophonic world. Light (opto) and sound (phonic) are two components of one layered spatial architecture. The
performer’s body is the third. Body, light and sound entangle in a complex interaction, inspired by the deep connection between an acoustic musician and his instrument: the interplay of biologic skin, muscles and bones and the mechanical vibrations, dampings and resonances entailing the audible vibrations.
By applying this integration to the electronic instrument the audience becomes aware of the bodily, and by extension the mental intention of the performer in the act of creation. The combination of the immersive optophonic shapes and the bodily effort to achieve them turn it into a fascinating trip through an abstract – though equally human – world http://dietervandoren.net

Program

Otso Lahdeoja

Otso Lahdeoja will perform a solo set for augmented guitar, created in Quebec during the winter 2011. The piece is called MUE, a french word referring to a metamorphosis, specifically the moulting of an insect or a reptile. It explores the many sonic sides of the augmented guitar, from acoustic to electronic. The music gradually unfolds new soundscapes, as a sonic road movie. MUE was originally created for music and live video, this time the piece will be performed in solo audio version. Otso Lahdeoja is a Finnish guitarist, composer and music researcher, currently based in Brussels. He has conducted research work on augmented instruments, leading to the construction of his augmented guitar on which he performs nowadays. His music aims to create a sonic space between the acoustic and the electric, effectively merging the instrumental tradition and electronic soundscapes. Otso’s artistic and scientific work has led him to perform and lecture around Europe, Canada, U.S.A. and Africa. Currently, he is working towards the domain of sonic installations and interactive spaces for music performance. http://otsola.org/http://otsola.org/http://otsola.org/

Govaert / De Joode / Stadhouders

Onno Govaert: drums / Wilbert De Joode: bass / Jasper Stadhouders: guitar

Govaert / De Joode / Stadhouders improvise. The trio comes from the vibrant Amsterdam improvised music scene and unites two generations of improvisers: the young and upcoming Onno Govaert and Jasper Stadhouders and the very experienced Wilbert De Joode. They all have worked with many of the (inter)national improv superstars. The music they play is extremely flexible and non-idiomatic.

Celer & Machinefabriek

Celer is Will Long, who currently lives in Tokyo, Japan, working in publishing, photography, music, and writing. He manages the label Two Acorns, and handles all releases, communication, and distribution of Celer and Chubby Wolf, also performing live regularly as Celer, and collaborating with other artists. www.thesingularwe.org
Machinefabriek s music combines elements of ambient, modern classical, minimalism, drone and field recordings. His pieces unfold as films without image, with a sharp ear for detail. After releasing a series of self released CD-Rs, the official debut, Marijn, was issued by Lampse in 2006.
Rutger Zuydervelt was born in 1978 in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands), but now resides in Rotterdam. He started working as Machine-fabriek in 2004. The name (meaning machine factory) was on the facade of a building Rutger passed everytime he went shopping for groceries. Except for a few piano and guitar lessons when he was young, Rutger didnt study music. Instead, he graduated as a graphic designer. The sleeves of his releases are practically always designer by Rutger himself, being a crucial part of the music.

Jan Kleefstra, Romke Kleefstra & Chris Bakker

Jan and Romke Kleefstra are mixing poetry, music and video on a spatial and melancholic manner, which originates in the human- free landscape of the Empty In the middle of Friesland. The fragments will land between the lakes and near the sea and the sensory repercussions. The music always creates instant for free improvisation. A list of all performances for recent years can be found on their blog: http://romkekleefstra.blogspot.com/
Anne Chris Bakker s iidea for music was born from a strong need to hand a long, dreamy make music and other sound heavy eruptions with distortion and feedback. Between these extremes are sound patches that occur over time and increasingly abstract from will take. What started as post rock music has become like a sound a bit harder to catch. With his music he wants to get carried away by his won musical imagination.

“Live Cinema“ today stands for the simultaneous creation of sound and image in real time by sonic and visual artists who collaborate on equal terms and with elaborate concepts. Mia Makela
On Wednesday 22nd February, in the second edition of 2012 wonderwerp at Studio Loos (20.30h 3€) will present three sets with their different approach to Live Cinema.
Nenad Popov `Congo Blue ́

Flores & Vega `Takes one & two ́

Macular `Lineaffix ́

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Congo Blue (Hybrid ballet in a petri dish) by Nenad Popov. Audiovisual composition based on the simulation of chemical, biological and behaviorist processes.
Many chemical and biological processes have amazing computing properties – a simple weighing scale uses gravity to perform division, certain type of slime mould can solve the
maze just by growing through it. This piece tries to explore the possibilities of using such systems in art practice. Starting point in this piece is chaos taking over the silence. Rising chaos becomes shaped by the simple chemical processes out of which new complex patterns emerge. The piece, both audio and video, is performed live, where the performer constantly steers the system between nothing, chaos and something meaningful or even beautiful.

http://morphogenesis.eu/

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Flores & Vega – ‘Takes one & two’
The performance here consists of two sketches developed into semi-maturity and focus on new, unattempted-by-us ideas hoping to discover some new approach to cinematics and music. The performance is a continuation of Flores and Vega’s work together over
the past 3 years which involved music visuals and live performance and although not VJ’ing the visuals then had a supporting purpose to the performance. Here and under the pretense of cinematics the performance points attention away from a live performer and uses the created visuals as the protagonist. In essence were just trying things out until something sticks and might become our next project. http://emmanuelflores.net http://www.henryvega.net

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Macular “Lineaffix”
A Live-Cinema performance inspired by the geometric paintings of François Morellet. The piece consists of abstract images which are created by combining moire patterns and feedback systems. In the composition Macular investigates the limits of our audio/ visual perception.
