Permissions AKA Loving with Both Hands (2019)
Smartphones are quiet agents, discreetly involved in countless moments of our lives. We can make limited decisions about how to use them, and how they will play a part in our everyday affairs. In this performance, mobile phones are exploited as storytelling devices that generate new narratives and questions on the spot.
Permissions A.K.A. Loving with Both Hands deals with privacy, feminist perspectives, data harvesting, and audience interaction. It is a pre-programmed live performance with video, sound, and a LED sign. It features high-energy club music, nighttime video sequences, auto-tuned voices, and seductive lyrics and texts. Personal text messages and phone calls with the audience make it an interactive piece, while also creating a chorus of live phone-calls and ring-tones. At its core, the work holds closely the enigmatic figure who first inspired it, Japanese pop icon Yamaguchi Momoe, who retired from her hugely successful public life and career at the age of 21.
This multi-modal work by artist Marianna Maruyama was made in close collaboration with programmer and sound artist Yiannis Tsirikoglou, video artist Ieva Kotryna Skirmantaite, and sound artist Andrius Arutiunian, and was gently advised by the data studies scholars at Utrecht Data School.
